Petro Doroshenko was born in Chyhyryn into a distinguished Cossack family renowned for its leadership legacy.
His father served as a colonel among the Registered Cossacks, and his grandfather Mykhailo held the bulava as hetman of the Registered Cossack Army around 1623 to 1628. While the details of his education remain unclear, Doroshenko was evidently well-educated, becoming fluent in Latin and Polish and acquiring extensive historical knowledge. In 1648, he joined Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s uprising against Polish rule, balancing military and diplomatic duties.
Serving chiefly within the Chyhyryn regiment as an artillery secretary, he rose to colonel of the Pryluky regiment by 1657.
Following Khmelnytsky’s death, Doroshenko supported Ivan Vyhovsky’s succession and assisted in quelling the pro-Russian rebellion between 1657 and 1658, a violent conflict with heavy casualties.
Elevated to chief yesaul by Hetman Pavlo Teteria in 1663, Doroshenko emerged as a leader among the Cossack senior officers and ecclesiastical figures opposing the 1654 Pereiaslav Agreement. With the support of the Crimean Tatars and the Ottoman Empire, he defeated pro-Russian Cossack factions and was proclaimed Hetman of Right-bank Ukraine on October 10, 1665.
